Democratic Republic of the Congo's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for rice ranged from 43,521 tonnes in 2002 to 191,111 tonnes in 2019. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 13.9%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2019 with a value of over 223 million USD, equivalent to 2.2% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest rice loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Democratic Republic of the Congo, on average the highest quantity of rice production occurs in Orientale. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated rice lost postharvest ranged from 190,373 people in 2002 to 835,971 people in 2019.
